COLD STRIPPERS Cold strippers are the most universally used chemical strippers. The ease of ap- plication, the versatility with reference to the scope of metals that can be stripped without attack, and the scope of organic coatings that can be stripped make cold strippers desirable. Cold strippers are primarily based on the following key ingredients: methylene chloride, phenolics, either alkaline and/or acid activa- tors, and any other compound that can be added to break the bond existing be- tween the organic coating and the substrate, whether it is phosphated, chro- mated, anodized, or any other surface treatment is used to give organic coat- ings a better anchor to the metallic substrate. Currently, a whole set of new paint strippers, both hot and cold, are being de- veloped to replace these chemicals. Unfortunately, this is not an easy task. Few, if any, chemicals perform with the speed and efficiency of methylene chloride. 259
